Consider a drinking glass in the state which we would normally call 'empty'.

Is it really empty?

Now that you are thinking about it, you might say that the glass is filled with air. You would be right, but for the sake of this discussion we need a more precise definition of what exactly is in the glass. Molecules? Yes, more precise, please. Atoms? Closer, but what are air, molecules, and atoms made out of?

If we had some kind of super-duper-ultra-magnifying microscope we might see that the contents of the glass looks something like the image to the right.

It's hard to say that everything is made out of energy, when in fact, everything IS energy. So, the above image isn't exactly right. The glass itself would also be glowing with its energy, along with the counter the glass is set upon, and the entire kitchen, house, neighborhood, animals, streets, dust particles, the planets...

Every single object and space is comprised of this energy. And that energy is what filled the universe before we, or any other matter, came into being.

Space equals energy.
